Basic Tricks - PART-3

Multiplication Shortcut Tricks-2

Shortcut to Multiply 2 digit by 2 digit

You can always use the method that we are used to in our school days to multiply any two numbers if you have sufficient time. But bank exams is all about answering maximum number of questions accurately in limited time.
How efficiently you manage time depends on how well you can apply the shortcut tricks that you learnt and practiced.

Here is a shortcut to multiply any 2 digit number by a 2 digit number within seconds.

Let us see the steps to multiply a 2 digit number by a 2 digit number
Step 1:Multiply the ten's place digit of the 1st number with ten's place digit of the 2nd number to get the ten's place digit of your answer.

Step 2:Leave a blank space in between. Now multiply the unit's place digit of the 1st number with the unit's place digit of the 2nd number to get the unit's place digit of your answer.

Step 3:Find the product of the inside numbers and the product of the extremes and add both and insert the digit in the blank space.

Let us consider an example to understand better

Example 1: 41 x 31=?

Step 1:Multiply unit's place digit of both the numbers as shown below
          1 x 1=1
Step 2:Find the product of inside numbers(1 x 3=3)
Find the product of extremes (4 x 1=4)
Now adding the product of inside numbers and extremes
           we get,
           (1 x 3)+(4 x 1)=3+4=7

          The middle digit is 7
Step 3:Multiply ten's place digit of both the numbers as shown     below
          4 x 3=12

Ans:    41 x 31=1271
Example 2: 46 x 36=?

Step 1:Multiply unit's place digit of both the numbers as shown below to get the unit's place digit which is 6
          6 x 6=36
Here we are getting 2 digit number on multiplication, we will keep the unit's place digit and add ten's place digit(3) to step 2
Step 2:Find the product of inside numbers(6 x 3=18)
Find the product of extremes (4 x 6=24)
Now adding the product of inside numbers and extremes
           we get,
           18+24=42
Now we shall add the ten's place digit we got from step 1.
          42+3=45
We shall keep unit's place digit and add ten's place digit(4) to
Step 3:Multiply ten's place digit of both the numbers as shown below
          4 x 3=12
Adding ten's place digit from step 2 we get
          12+4=16

Ans:    46 x 36=1656

Example 1: 12 x 15 = ?

Step 1:We find that half of the number is
            12 /2 = 6

Step 2: Adding the given number and the result obtained in step 1
            we get 12 + 6 = 18

Step 3:Multiplying the result obtained in step 2 by 10
            we get 180

Ans 12 x 15 = 180

Example 2:48 x 15 = ?

Step 1:We find that half of the number is
            48 /2 = 24

Now you try applying this trick to multiply 25, 72 ,43,57 by 15 in secs

Shortcut to multiply any 2 digit number by 11

Multiplying any 2 digit number by 11 is the easiest when you know this trick.
Let us now quickly go through the steps
Step 1: Enter the unit’s place digit as it is. This will be the last digit of your answer.
Step 2: Enter the ten’s place digit leaving a blank in between for the middle digit.
Step 3: To find the middle digit, add unit’s place digit and ten’s place digit and input the digit in the blank.
NOTE: On adding if you arrive at a 2 digit number then, input only the unit’s place of the middle digit in the blank and add the ten’s place digit of the middle digit to the original ten’s place digit of the number.
Let me explain with an example to make it easy to understand

Example 1: 42 X 11

Step 1: Here the unit’s place digit is 2 which we will enter as it is i.e 2
Step 2: Here the ten’s place digit is 4, so we input it as follows leaving a blank between the unit’s place digit and the ten’s place digit for the middle digit.
 4_2
Step 3: Now, By adding unit’s place digit and ten’s place digit (4+2=6)we get the middle digit as 6 which we shall enter in the blank as follows.
462
Ans : 42x11=462

3 digit multiplication trick in banking

A person who knows math tricks certainly has an edge over the others. With the ability to rapid do mental calculation one will not only be able to score higher marks in competitive exams but will also enhance his mental sharpness enormously. Its fun to calculate this way after all, steps of calculation need not be shown on paper!

Below we shall discuss one such multiplication trick wherein you will be able to multiply any two 3 digit numbers easily within seconds.
One thing to remember here is that both the numbers should be close to 100.The closer they are the easier it is to multiply.

Here are steps to do the 3 digit multiplication in detail

Step 1:Find the difference of each of the numbers from 100
Step 2:Multiply the differences that you found in step 1 to get the unit's place digit
Step 3:Add the differences of both the numbers to 100 and place them to the left of the result obtained in step 2.

Let us now consider an example to understand better

Example 1: 102 x 103

Here we notice that both the numbers are close to 100
We shall apply the technique that we learnt

Step 1:First we find the differences of the numbers
We observe that
102 is 2 more than 100 so the difference is 2
103 is 3 more than 100 so the difference is 3

Step 2:Multiplying the differences
we get,
2 x 3=6 which is the unit's place digit.

Step 3:Now to find the rest of the number adding the differences to 100
we get,
2+3+100=105

Placing 105 to the left of the result obtained in step 2(6)
we get
102 x 103=10506

Ans 10506

Try multiplying the below numbers using the above trick and see how fast you are able to do it
(1)101 x 102
(2)102 x 104
(3)103 x 104
(4)104 x 105
(5)105 x 106
(6)106 x 107
(7)107 x 108
(8)108 x 109

Shortcut to Multiply Any Number from 10-19 by 6

Today we shall see a new trick to multiply any number from 10-19  by 6 in seconds

Let us see the steps

Step 1:Assume 10 as base
Step 2:Multiply the base by 6
Step 3:Multiply the unit place digit by 6
Step 4:Add the results obtained in step 2 and step 3 to get your answer
Now, Let us consider an example to understand better

Example 1:14 x 6=?

Step 1: Assuming base as 10
Step 2:Multiplying the base by 10
          We get, 10 x 6= 60
Step 3:Multiplying the unit place digit by 6
          We get, 4 x 6=24
Step 4:Adding results of step 2 and step 3
           We get, 60 + 24 = 84
Ans 14 x 6 = 84
